Pet Rabbits Go Green!

Fuel prices, food prices, entertainment prices, prices for schools, electronics, household items, and pet supplies have all sky rocketed. Not only has the cost of living out distanced the sun, taking care of a pet rabbit has become more of a hassle than it should be.

Pet Rabbits as Eco-Friendly Pals

Your family pet can now be an environmental asset instead of a household liability. What can you, as the rabbit owner do to insure that your rabbit is helping in the crusade to save the planet? Here are a few ideas:

- Don't throw away last year's phone directories. These can be used as bunny chew toys. They chew on them and make the pieces into recycled bedding. Reusing something as paper "heavy" as a phone book can seriously save space in landfills and allows for something created for only one purpose to find more meaning in its short life. Also, by reusing old phone books you are saving on the cost of pet rabbit bedding. Imagine what you can do with an extra $20 in your pocket...maybe buy some gasoline?

- Everyone knows that you can use old newspapers as cage lining. Once you are done reading through all the sections that matter to you, don't throw it in the trash bin! Take that morning newspaper and make a rabbit cage liner stack! Lining your pet rabbit cage with old newspapers allows you to save money on expensive wood chips or litter.

- Yes, that old newspaper has had its use as cage lining, but what do you do with it now? Well, when the time to clean the cage comes you should remember that both rabbit waste and newspaper biodegrade at a rapid pace. If you have a compost pile, throw the used cage lining there. If you don't have a compost pile, why not start one? Compost piles are great ways to created something useful out of something decaying.

- Your poor pet rabbit has been standing around on a wire cage all day long. His poor little bunny feet are sore from the hardness of the cage bottom. What can you as the beloved owner of this pet rabbit do to ease his rabbit distress? Why not put pieces of old carpet in the cage? Placing small squares of carpet in the corners of the cage give the bunny a place to rest his weary feet. Make sure not to cover the whole cage with carpeting; you will want a place for all the pet rabbit waste to go.

See! Everyone can do their part in creating a healthy and eco-friendly situation. You probably never knew that your pet rabbit had the ability help save the environment. Just think of it...your pet rabbit goes green!
